Instruction
The instruction is based on the use of the tools and technical processes traditionally used by the artisans of Pietrasanta, developed over centuries of experience in marble carving, and combined with a modern creative approach to realizing sculpture in stone.

Workshops are held in English. All aspects of carving are discussed and demonstrated, including stone selection, safe and efficient use of hand, air and electric power tools, as well as different approaches to developing and realizing a design in stone. The three major steps in the carving process, roughing out, modeling the form, and finishing are all explained in depth and demonstrated. Students are able to develop an individual approach to carving based on their preferred tools and techniques.

The workshop founder and instructor, Kyle Smith, is a highly qualified artist and teacher with over 27 years experience in marble carving. Originally from Albany, New York, she began living in Italy in 1973 while studying in Urbino at the Academia di Belli Arti. In 1976 she moved to Pietrasanta, initially learning marble sculpting skills directly from the artisans of Pietrasanta while creating her own sculptures in marble and bronze.  Along with her experience as marble carver and sculptor, Kyle has been a marble consultant on important architectural projects including fountains, facades and interiors, and worked in the field of design. Her sculptures have been exhibited internationally in the U.S., Italy, France, Holland and Taiwan. Since 1990, she has held annual summer workshops in marble carving in Pietrasanta, Italy.
